There’s almost nothing more important to do over the summer than spending time with your kids and family. The summer is when you can get outside and pull your son and/or daughter away from the television screen or whatever electronic device they tend to use.

Luckily, that shouldn’t be too difficult during the summer in St. Joseph and Elkhart counties, where there’s plenty of activities to do and places to go.

Curious? Surprised? Check out the list below for inspiration.

Edge Adventures Park in South Bend’s Rum Village

Just fifteen minutes south of Notre Dame is Edge Adventures Park in South Bend’s Rum Village. It offers a series of aerial parks that are designed for different ages and difficulty levels. Each aerial park is a self-guided challenge course that takes you through treetop trails. You and your family will get to climb over obstacles and go on zip lines.

This activity is fun for all ages, and season passes are available.

National New York Central Railroad Museum

Located in Elkhart, the National New York Central Railroad Museum will take you and your family to another time, when trains were still the main method for transporting goods. The museum offers tours and is equipped with old trains and model sets. This is an excellent opportunity for you and your family to learn about a piece of American history and explore cool-looking trains together. Plus, what kid doesn’t like trains?!

Blackthorn Topgolf Swing Suites in Granger

Officially launching in November, Blackthorn Topgolf Swing Suites in Granger’s Toscana Park is a welcome addition to the area. In addition to Topgolf interactive simulators, games such as Zombie Dodgeball, baseball, hockey, carnival games and more are also available on the simulators. Blackthorn Topgolf Swing Suites also offer an excellent restaurant and full bar.

You rent time at an interactive simulator by the hour (not per person) and a member of their wait staff will serve you while you play. Try to reserve an interactive simulator in advance. They book up fast.

Putt-Putt Fun Center

A staple of St. Joseph County for many years, the Putt Putt Fun Center in Mishawaka is fun for all ages. Putt Putt offers an outdoor 18-hole miniature golf course, where you can play one round for $6 per person or two rounds for $8 per person. Inside there’s also a game zone full of arcade machines and the opportunity to earn tickets, which can be redeemed for prizes.

White Water Rafting on the East Race

While this might sound intense, White Water Rafting on the East Race River is safe and well regulated. On Saturdays and Sundays starting June 8, the East Race will provide inflated rafts and safety equipment for you and your family to use to ride the rapids. Better yet, it’s cheap.

One ride costs $6 per person, $10 per person for two rides, or you can purchase three rides for $15. Instructors and guides will stand along the portion of the East Race to make sure everyone is safe and easily makes it to their end destination.
