For our kiddos, the warm weather and abundance of sunshine mean only one thing: school is almost out for the summer.

The key word is almost. While our kids (and their teachers) are getting antsy for the freedom of summer, it’s still important to make these last few weeks count so that our kids do great on final exams and end on a high note.

Are your kids super antsy for summer? You’re not alone! Here are some tips to help them (and you) make it through until the last day of school.

Keep your routine consistent

Don’t sacrifice your routine just because the sun is shining. Make sure your kids are getting up at the same time in the morning that they were in December. Make sure your kids still do their homework at the same time, eat dinner at a similar time and go to bed at the same time. It reinforces the message that school is still in session and important.

Get active in the great outdoors after school

When your kids have free time after school, make sure they’re spending it outside and not inside. Have them go for a walk, sign them up for a summer recreational soccer, baseball or softball league or simply play basketball with them in the driveway. The more your kids are enjoying the outdoors after school, the easier it will be for them to focus when they have to be indoors learning.

Make sure your kids get a good night’s sleep

Your kids may not want to stick to their bedtime when the sun is setting later, but making sure they are well rested will keep them focused during the day.

Focus on the school day while building anticipation for summer

Make sure you’re still asking your kids what they learned at school that day. What lessons did they learn? How were their teachers and friends? What did they do during recess? Be genuinely interested because your excitement for learning will help your kids stay interested.

If you’re planning a summer vacation, especially for right after school ends, it’s great to build anticipation for the trip and have your kids help plan activities. If they know they have to continue doing well in school to “earn” the vacation, they will stay focused to finish out the last few weeks.
